This is an adaptation of a one-shot, that was written by Oda in 1994, before he started working on One Piece.
Despite being a standalone, its main lead is part of the One Piece canon.

This is an adaptation of the one-shot "Chapter 0", which was written by Oda and released alongside one of the Marineford chapters.
The events of this episode are canon & also good to have as context going into Movie #10 (One Piece Film: Strong World).
For some reason, however, they thought it would be a good idea to basically spoil the majority of the movie in the preview for this episode...
So be careful & skip about a quarter of the way into the video, and then backtrack to 1:45
